I Was A Tourist.......Posted by Danielle Schneider in Untagged |
Life has gotten back to normal here and that is wonderful. This week I was able to accomplish a lot of work in the office. I have had two individual volunteers helping me this week so jobs that I needed to get to but had not had the time they took over and have now completed just about every single one!! Because of them tackling those jobs I was able to work in the officeand finally get everything cleaned on my side so it actually looks like an office now for me and Chantel. Each afternoon this week I was able to go to children's club. I was doing some touring of taking people to see a children's club so it was cool to tour people but at the same time be able to get around to every community and seeing children's club. This week basically started the new structure for the Life Skills. I will explain all of the latest info in the next newsletter because it will take a lot of time. For now just know that it is changing but everyone is up for the change and excited to see how God is going to use this new time!!
I have spent some time this past week with Pat. She is a American vol that I have talked about from time to time well she has been here for four years and is leaving on Thursday to go back to the USA. Pat has become like my South-African mom here someone who I could talk to and just go hang out at her house. God has called her back to the USA but I know we are going to miss her terribly here. So we have had some time this week to just hang out and such. I am a little worried because it has not fully hit me yet that she is leaving or maybe God is just keeping me strong knowing that no matter where each of us live we will always stay in touch. This week also saw a new vol coming who has become a good friend to me over the past year and a half. Melanie is here from Shades Mountain Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL and she is here for at least two years. I have a feeling we are going to be good friends. It is just like God to bring people into your life at the perfect time.
Well it is also official that this weekend I was actually a tourist in Cape Town!! On Saturday all of the volunteers along with about 20,000 others had tickets to the Cape Town Soccer Stadium to witness the first event held in the new stadium. The event was to have a band called Freshly Ground perform and then a soccer match between two Cape Town teams. I was just so excited to have the chance to go to the stadium. The tickets were sooooooo cheap (30 Rand which is 5.00 US Dollars). Well it was an adventure to get there....we got there and walked through the stadium and of course everyone was taking tons and tons of pictures. The event was just to kick off things and they only opened the first level of the stadium so we had good seats. Now lets talk soccer......I was not too impressed with the game. No one scored a single goal so it was not too terribly exciting but it was cool to be able to sit in the stadium. All during the game people were blowing these horns called Vu Vu Zeelas which are the loudest thing you can imagine and literally so many be blown I can't truly describe the sound to each of you except to say that I can still hear the horns blowing a day later!! The game came down to a shoot out and so that was cool to watch!! On Sunday, some of us had a farewell lunch for Pat and it was at a place called MOYO which is a restaurant that all of us have wanted to go to but no one had yet so we went. It is so fun because we got to eat in the trees!! The restaurant is a buffet and they come around and play African music for you, they paint your face, and bring you water to wash your hands. It was such a fun experience to share with Pat and the other American vols. I do not have many times where I feel like a tourist because this place really has become home but today eating taking pictures I felt like a tourist and we had a lot of fun. We did have some tears but the laughs and good food weighted more than the tears.
